Transient Incontinence: A Helpful Guide
You’ve been experiencing some bladder leakage recently, and you finally got a diagnosis: transient incontinence. If you have never heard of this term before, you’re not alone. It’s not very common and not many people know what it is. In this guide, we’ll explain what transient incontinence is, how it’s treated, and what you can do to manage your symptoms until your incontinence fully resolves.

What Is Transient Incontinence?
Transient incontinence is temporary incontinence that is caused by an underlying condition. Once the health condition is treated and resolved, the incontinence goes away as well. Transient incontinence is almost always a symptom or a side effect of another health condition, as opposed to the root of the problem.
Transient incontinence can take several different forms. Some people experience the overwhelming urge to urinate, often followed by the involuntary loss of urine. They may also experience an increased frequency in urges, leading to constant bathroom stops. Other people experience a constant leakage of urine, often without the urge to urinate. Activities such as coughing, sneezing, running, or jumping can also lead to the involuntary loss of urine. Other symptoms include a burning sensation while urinating and pain in the pelvic area.
Perhaps the most common cause of transient incontinence is a urinary tract infection, or UTI. However, transient incontinence can have multiple other causes besides a UTI, including low estrogen, diabetes, constipation, and even certain medications. Your doctor will work with you to determine the underlying causes and determine a course of treatment (more on this in the next section). What to Do About Transient Incontinence
If you think that you are experiencing transient incontinence, you should see a medical expert to get a diagnosis and treatment plan. If you self-diagnose, then you might not actually identify the real underlying cause, and whatever self-treatment you attempt won’t help as much, and could actually make things worse.
In some cases, the treatment will be a simple fix. For instance, if your doctor diagnoses you with a UTI, then they will prescribe a short course of antibiotics to clear up the infection, which should also make the transient incontinence go away. If the cause is constipation, they will likely recommend that you take a laxative until the problem passes — and so on.
Your doctor might also recommend some dietary changes to ease your symptoms of incontinence even faster. As an example, drinking too many fluids will cause frequent urination urges, so they may recommend that you cut back on your beverage consumption. They will also likely recommend that you stop eating foods that are known bladder irritants, such as citrus fruits and spicy foods. While they might not be the root cause of your transient incontinence, these dietary choices can worsen your symptoms, so following your doctor’s orders can help you feel better faster.
If your doctor thinks that weak pelvic muscles are contributing to your bladder leakage, then they will also likely recommend that you start a regimen of pelvic floor exercises as well. These exercises build your pelvic floor muscles through targeted contractions and sometimes the use of Kegel balls as well.
