8 Foods That Are Good for Your Bladder
Your diet has a major impact on your overall health, and this is true for your bladder health as well. You’ve probably heard a lot about foods that can irritate your bladder, such as spicy dishes and chocolate. But what about foods that are actually good for your bladder? In this list, we’ve rounded up eight items that are actually beneficial for your bladder health — and be sure to check out our guide to calming an irritated bladder.

1. Whole Grains
As long as you aren’t sensitive to gluten, grains are generally a good option for sensitive tummies and bladders. Whole grains are an especially great choice because they contain complex carbohydrates, lower levels of sugar, and higher levels of fiber. This prevents blood sugar spikes and fights against constipation. Choose quinoa, rice, oats, and similar whole grains over processed carbs, and your bladder will thank you.

2. Fruits (Except Citrus)
Fruits are excellent for your overall health, including your bladder health. They are another healthy form of carbs, and they’re also high in fiber as well, which keeps you regular and guards against constipation. Bananas are especially good for promoting bowel movements, while pears are particularly high in antioxidants while being low in sugar. Just be sure to avoid citrus fruits as well as tomatoes, which are high in acids that will irritate your bladder.
3. Cruciferous Vegetables
Cruciferous vegetables are a specific subset of produce that includes broccoli, cauliflower, arugula, bok choy, kale, radish, Brussels sprouts, and more. They are very high in fiber and folate, which encourage bowel movements. They are also high in vitamins such as C, E, and K. These can be eaten roasted, steamed, or raw for a variety of tastes and textures.
4. Potatoes
We are happy to report that everyone’s favorite comfort food —potatoes — goes easy on your bladder. In fact, both regular potatoes and sweet potatoes are totally fine to eat. They are versatile, affordable, and can be cooked a variety of different ways. If you prefer your potatoes fried, try an air fryer to cut down on your oil consumption.

5. Nuts
Nuts are high in both proteins and healthy fats, which is why they make it onto so many lists of healthy foods, including this one. However, some nuts can cause bladder irritation if eaten too much. We recommend eating almonds, cashews, and peanuts if you are looking to benefit your bladder health.
6. Lean Proteins
Proteins are some of the least irritating foods that you can eat. For the best results, prioritize lean, low-fat proteins such as fish, chicken, and turkey. Red meat is fine in moderation, but try to select low-fat cuts and watch your overall consumption. As with the potatoes, you should try to avoid frying the meat in oil, which can lead to irritation. Instead, opt for baking, roasting, or steaming your meats instead.
7. Beans
If you don’t eat meat, or are looking to reduce your meat consumption, beans are another bladder-friendly source of protein. They are very high in fiber as well as protein, so you get two benefits in one. Beans are available in many different forms, not only canned and dried but also made into pasta, bread, and other products. Do watch your portion size though, as eating too many beans can lead to bloating and gas.

8. Eggs and Dairy
Eggs are yet another excellent alternative protein that won’t irritate your bladder. The vitamin D in other milk products such as milk and yogurt is good for bladder health, but many people are sensitive to lactose and the tradeoff might not be worth it for everyone. If you find that regular dairy upsets your stomach, then look into plant-based alternatives such as almond milk, which may work better for you.
